Hi, I’m Anthony

I’m French, and I’ve been teaching my language to adults since 2007. In Mexico, in Hong Kong, in France, in Switzerland, and online with students from all over the world.

I speak English and Spanish, and I lived abroad for more than ten years. I know what it is to learn a language as an adult, far from home.

What I’ve learned in all those years

More content is never the answer

There is more free French online than anyone could finish in a lifetime. What works is someone who listens to how you speak, remembers it, and builds the next lesson on it.

A good feeling matters

Between a student and a teacher, a good feeling matters more than any method. Without it, learning is hard. That’s why everything starts with a trial lesson.

It’s allowed to be fun

People learn faster when they’re relaxed. I’ve always wanted my lessons to be a good time, and they’re still real work.

My story, in short

Languages have been my thing since school. Here is how they led me to teaching French.

  1. 1980

    Vendôme, France

I was born in Vendôme, a small town in the Loir-et-Cher, in the middle of an afternoon in May. My parents and my three-year-old sister were, apparently, very happy.

  2. 1991 – 2004

    English and Spanish at school

I loved languages early on. I could have chosen German, but I picked English and Spanish: two languages to talk with as many people as possible in the world.

  3. 1995 – 1996

    England and Ireland

Two summers of language trips: English lessons in the morning, visits in the afternoon, host families in the evening. Good news: most of the time, people understood me!

  4. 2003 – 2004

    Madrid, Spain

My first time living abroad, for a year of Erasmus studies in the Spanish capital. You never progress as much as when you live in the country… ¡otra cerveza, por favor!

  5. 2005

    Regina, Canada

Time to improve my English: a semester at the University of Regina, in the middle of winter, with temperatures down to −52 °C. My friends on campus were mostly Mexican and Colombian, so my Spanish improved too.

  6. 2006 – 2007

    Around the world

Almost a year with a backpack, on every continent, with a friend. In the backpack, a camera and a computer: we visited local primary schools and made short documentaries for a class in Montpellier, about saving water. English and Spanish took us everywhere, except the Chinese countryside, where we talked with our hands. Google Translate didn’t exist yet.

  7. 2007 – 2008

    Mexico City

During the trip I had time to think about what I wanted to do. In Mexico, I started teaching French, first in a language school, then in a high school of the Tecnológico de Monterrey. I prepared teenagers for the DELF A1, A2 and B1, and taught adults. I loved it. And my Spanish quickly took on a Mexican accent.

  8. 2008

    Sydney, Australia

A few months in Sydney. My Spanish was useless there, and my English met the Australian accent. G’day mate!

  9. 2008 – 2015

    Hong Kong

Seven years in a city where you live with Chinese culture while speaking English, surrounded by people of every nationality. I taught children, teenagers and adults, in language centres, in private lessons and at a Chinese university, and I learned enough Cantonese to talk with taxi drivers. In 2009, with a friend who was also a French teacher, I created French Learning Café. The idea: learn French properly, and have a good time doing it. The school grew, other teachers joined, and we built a programme with a lot of audio for pronunciation. Our students could already review their lessons on their phones.

  10. 2015 – 2019

Mexico City and Playa del Carmen

Love called me back to Mexico. Three years in Mexico City, then one in Playa del Carmen, on the Caribbean coast, with Anabel, who is now my wife. I kept teaching French: private lessons, a fashion school, and lessons online.

  11. 2019

    Back in France

Back in my own country, after more than ten years abroad. It was almost a new culture: I had to get used again to the codes, the reactions and the way of thinking of the French. For three years I worked in customer service for an online sports shop, in French, English and Spanish. At home, Anabel and I speak Spanish and French.

  12. 2022

    Online French Teacher

I missed teaching too much. I started onlinefrenchteacher.com and went back to private lessons online, with many ideas to help people learn French more effectively.

  13. 2025

    Geneva, Switzerland

I couldn’t miss the chance: group lessons in a small language school in Geneva, close to home, with people from all over the world who need French every day, and students preparing for the Swiss FIDE test. Swiss French and Swiss culture are a little different from France, and once again, I learn a lot.

  14. 2026

    Social French

Online French Teacher becomes Social French: an online school with private lessons, Smart Classrooms, the A1 beginner course and the community.

Why Social French

One lesson a week is not enough to learn a language. What happens between two lessons matters just as much: reviewing, practising, speaking with other people.

I want every student to have the means to progress, including outside the lessons. Social French is an online school, so these means are online too.

Smart Classrooms, to review

After each lesson, your Smart Classroom is in your account: the summary, your vocabulary with audio, your corrections and your homework. You review when you want, and I prepare the next lesson from it.

How Smart Classrooms work

The community, to practise

A place to write in French with other learners in the same situation as you, and with me. People who are also moving, working or preparing an exam in French.

About the community

It’s the same idea as in Hong Kong in 2009, when our students could already review their lessons on their phones. People who come back to a lesson remember it.

What students say

In their words, not mine.

“I first started taking French lessons with Anthony when I moved to Geneva for a new job. I hardly spoke a single word of French and was a little nervous to take up lessons as I have always lacked confidence when it comes to language learning.”

“My trepidation did not last: Anthony is thoughtful, patient, encouraging, as well as challenging in the right moments too. He’s a fabulous teacher and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to those willing to learn French online! Merci Anthony!”

Matthew J.
From England, lives in Switzerland

“There are almost 5 months since we have started our French lessons with Anthony. During this period I have passed 2 TCF exams. I was really surprised with the result B1! Frankly, I was expecting ones between A1 and A2.”

“And it was one of the Anthony’s big support and the right course navigation!”

Kamilla V.
From Azerbaijan, lives in Switzerland

“Thank you so much again for the excellent preparation of the French part! This has been extremely helpful.”

“The practicing with you has really been extremely helpful and great fun. I hope to return to practicing French with you at some point.”

One lesson. Then you’ll know.

Let’s meet in a trial lesson. You’ll see how I teach, and we’ll find out if we get along.
